In the Health and Physical Education key learning area at Emmaus College we empower students by providing them with the opportunity to develop knowledge, processes, skills and attitudes necessary to make informed decisions about:
-
Promoting the health of the individual and communities (PH);
-
Developing concepts and skills for physical activity (DC);
-
Enhancing personal development (PD).
Students are encouraged to act, individually and collectively, in culturally appropriate ways, to enhance health and well being and to develop the ability to establish long term positive relationships with other people.
Active engagement in physical activity is a major emphasis at Emmaus College as we recognize that participation in physical activity promotes health and self-respect. We also acknowledge the unique role that physical activity has a medium for learning.
We maintain integrity in this learning area in two ways.
-Firstly, as a department we emphasize such social justice principles as diversity, equity and supportive environments. These principles underpin what we do at the school and guide us in the design and delivery of courses. They allow us to provide an inclusive program that is available to all students and enhances their ability to develop positive relationships.
-The learning experiences provided throughout the program empower students to understand and appreciate difference and diversity. It allows students to value and respect differences between, or special needs of, all groups – girls; boys; students with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background; students from different cultural or linguistic backgrounds; students with disabilities; students who are geographically isolated; and students who are gifted and talented or have particular learning needs.
-Secondly the Emmaus College Junior Health and Physical Education work program follows the QSA Years 1 – 10 Syllabus and is designed to assist students to become lifelong learners.
The Emmaus College Junior Health and Physical Education work program has been designed so the students have two different pathways that they can follow. One pathway leads to the OP based senior course Physical Education and the other pathway leads to the non OP based senior course Recreational Pursuits.
Through this subject the Health and Physical Education department also strives to meet the Government stipulation of a compulsory 2 hours of physical activity every week for students in years 8 & 9.
